If you’ve been told you might benefit from a vaginal support pessary or are simply curious about this as an option in your pelvic health management, then have a read of this blog to learn more about what a pessary is, when and why it might be used and some common questions that we get asked.

What is a Vaginal Support Pessary?

A vaginal support pessary is a small, removable device made of medical-grade silicone. It is designed to fit inside the vagina to provide structural support to the pelvic organs. Think of it like a sports bra but for your vagina!

Pessaries come in various shapes and sizes to suit individual needs. They are a non-surgical option and can often provide significant relief for symptoms caused by pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or urinary incontinence.

Why and When Might You Use a Pessary?

Your pelvic floor physiotherapist or doctor might suggest a pessary as a part of your overall management plan. Below are the most common reasons that we might prescribe a pessary at Four.

FAQs About Pessaries

Will I feel the pessary inside me?

Not if it is fitted correctly. A well fitted pessary should be comfortable and unnoticeable during daily activities.

Can I exercise with a pessary?

Yes! A properly fitted pessary can provide support during physical activities like walking, running, or in the gym.

How often do I need to remove the pessary?

This depends on the type of pessary that is fitted and the reason for using the pessary. Some types allow you to leave the pessary in for 3-6 months at a time, whereas others need to be removed every few days.

How often should I have my pessary checked?

Regular check-ups every 6 months (or as advised by your physio or doctor) are important to ensure the pessary remains effective and comfortable.

Can I have intercourse with the pessary in?

This depends on the type of support pessary used, as some can stay in and others will need to be removed. Your physio will be able to advise you on this.

If you are in Christchurch and considering a pessary or have questions about whether it might be suitable for you, feel free to reach out or book online with one of our trained pelvic floor physiotherapists, or chat to your GP for more information.
