What are shin splints?
Shin splints (also referred to as medial tibial stress syndrome) refer to pain along the inner edge of the shin bone (tibia). This condition is common among runners, athletes, and individuals who have recently increased their physical activity. The pain is typically caused by excessive stress on the shinbone and surrounding tissues, leading to inflammation and discomfort that can range from mild to severe.
Common causes of shin splints
The most common cause of shin splints is poor load management - i.e. doing too much, too soon! A sudden spike in training volume or intensity with any weight-bearing activities can lead to excessive strain on the lower legs, and therefore increase the risk of injury. A lack of strength or load capacity in the muscles supporting the shinbone can also contribute, as the body struggles to absorb impact effectively. Other factors, such as improper or worn out footwear, as well as biomechanical issues like poor foot posture and/or running form, can place additional stress on the lower leg, making shin splints more likely to develop.
What can be done to improve shin splints?
Effective management of shin splints involves addressing both the symptoms and the underlying causes. Strengthening key muscle groups, particularly in the lower legs and feet, helps improve load capacity and reduces stress on the tibia. Managing training load by making gradual increases in activity rather than sudden spikes allows the body to adapt safely. Addressing biomechanical issues, such as poor running gait or excessive pronation, can further reduce strain and improve movement efficiency.
How can physiotherapy help?
Physiotherapy is an excellent option for treating and preventing shin splints. Our physiotherapists can assess your movement patterns, strength, and biomechanics to identify contributing factors. They will create a tailored strengthening and rehabilitation program, ensuring you build the resilience needed to return to activity safely. Our physios can also carry out a running assessment and work on any technique changes with you to reduce too much loading on your shins. If necessary, we can also perform manual therapy such as massage and dry needling, as well as use strapping techniques to help manage pain and symptoms.
At Four, we are well-connected with some of Christchurch’s top podiatrists and sports physicians. If further intervention is required, we can refer you to trusted specialists to ensure you receive the best possible care.
